Rejected at the Blood Bank on my Birthday

I tried to give blood but my count was 34 and it needs to be 38. I did get to vote. But this blood thing bothers me. I'm not even really sure what it means for my blood count to be low. I actually feel good today. Better than usual so I thought the vitamens and the extra greens I've been eating were working. Well, maybe they are and before my count was lower.

Reading the handout I was given as consolation. The 34 is a percentage of red blood cells. I'm in a group of about 10% of donation wanna-be population. They recommend not drinking tea because it inhibits iron absorption by 50%. That's good to know. My daughter has low iron and she's a big tea drinker. I had my favorite peppermint tea last night. I hadn't had any in weeks. Is the universe conspiring against me? Can having a low red low count make a person paranoid?

WebMD gives a thorough account of blood testing

The handout includes a list of iron rich food. I have shrimp in the oven now. I'll post the list at MPW and add a link. I'll also make a list of C + iron food combinations - the handy handout states that foods with a lot of vitamin C heighten the absorption of iron-rich foods if the two are eaten together.

So maybe the point in my going to the Red Cross was not to give blood but to push me to learn more about what I'm eating.

P.S. I worked out yesterday
